Greatest Commandment

I find it interesting that Blackaby ends today's devotional asking us if we are living our lives in obedience to God and/or in the standards God has set before us, while our New Testament reading for the day ends with Jesus answering the teacher of the law by laying out the greatest commandment.  Blackaby (by using Moses as the example) challenges each of us to live a life of holiness.  He ends by asking three questions:

(1)  Are you trying to serve God and yet ignoring something He has told you to do?
 (2) Are you living your life as if God does not notice your disobedience?
(3) Do you apply God's standards to yourself as rigorously as you apply them to others?

There are points in our spiritual walk where we can get so caught up in things of this world that we completely overlook the things that matter... things that are eternal.  If we are caught up "wordly" things, how do we get back on track to living a life of holiness?  Where do we start?

One place to start would be to look at Jesus' answer when asked which commandment is the most important.  Jesus tells us that the most important commandment is to, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'  The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [Mark 12:30-31 NIV].  It may seem elementary but if we, as Christians, are following/living the greatest commandment set before us, we will have a strong foundation to living a life of holiness.  The basic answers to Blackaby's questions are found in this commandment.  Maybe we could summarize Blackaby's three questions into two questions:

(1)  Are you loving the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength?
 (2) Are you loving your neighbor as yourself?

By looking at both the daily devotional and the daily New Testament reading, I hope you are challenged... challenged to live a life that fulfills the greatest commandment, which will in turn set a foundation for a life of holiness.
