The Name We Bear

My wife and I just finished re-watching Michael Phelps receive his 7th (Seventh!) Gold Medal of this Olympic Games. After pulling off yet another seemingly impossible come-from-behind victory in the 100m Butterfly, he graciously took his familiar spot atop the podium and bowed to receive his reward. I commented to Cheyenne that with all the hoopla surrounding him these days, the 23-year old from Baltimore seems to be handling it pretty well. He has truly made our nation proud, both in his remarkable athletic feats and through his perhaps more incredible calm and humble demeanor. As an American, you can't help but be excited that he is wearing our colors.

Unfortunately, not all of our victorious athletes make us as proud as Michael Phelps. Far too often arrogance and attitude overshadow athletic accomplishments. Sometimes I find myself wishing that the person on my TV was not decked out in red, white, & blue.

This morning, Henry Blackaby provided a great reminder for followers of Jesus: "As Christians, we carry the name of our Savior." His is a holy name and our actions and attitudes ought to reflect His divine character. Far too many of us, however, are prone toward living in a way that brings more shame to the name of God than honor. Our lives do not reflect His transforming power or relentless love and yet we still bear His Name.

As you continue to enjoy the Olympics and your chest swells with pride each time an American outlasts his/her opponents, keep in mind that you bear a Name far more worthy of honor and praise than the Stars & Stripes. May our lives make Him proud to call us His own.
