My Will/His Will

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1

David was a man characterized by God as being “after God’s own heart” That is high praise for any man. Why did he receive such a high compliment from the God of the universe? Because he sought God in all that he did (well almost everything). He was a man that had much, and a man that failed much; but he understood a few things really well. One of the things that he understood well was that nothing on earth, even the things that were under his earthly dominion, was his. It all belongs to God and could be given or taken away as God saw fit. David knew that whatever God willed would happen and he prayed for that will to be done.

Much in the same way, Jesus instructs us to pray in Matthew 6 “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Jesus modeled this type of surrender to God’s will in his life and he is our model for turning over what we want and exchanging it for what God wants.

Blackaby touches on this in today’s devotional and reminds us that we have a part in God’s will being worked out in this world.

“As you seek the Lord’s will, He will guide your praying. He will invite you not only to pray, but also to become involved in His activity as He answers your prayer. If He places a burden upon you to pray for an individual’s salvation, that burden is also His invitation to join His activity in that person’s life.”

Nothing we have is ours; it ALL belongs to God so doesn’t it make sense for us to act in such a way that we would be willing to do whatever God says to do, with whatever He has given us to do it with, and to whoever He would lead us to, wherever they may be, whenever He says to do it. May we never think ourselves to busy to pray for God’s will to be done. May we never be found lax in playing an active role in seeking out what God’s will would be in our lives and then acting purposefully and passionately to fulfill what it is that God would have us to do.

Help us Jesus!
