The wounds of a friend are faithful because they are inclined toward redemption and restoration. The wounds of a friend are faithful because they are of high calling – seeking God’s transforming glory in the life of another. It is sometimes difficult to find the balance between loving rebuke and judgmental rejection, yet we are commanded to speak the truth diligently. In II Timothy 4:2, Timothy is challenged to “preach the Word, being ready in season and out of season; to reprove, to rebuke, to exhort with great patience and instruction”. Earlier he had been encouraged to remain diligent, handling accurately the word of truth. These ideas seem to complement our devotion for today. We are to never tire in exhorting with great patience; in handling the Word of God is such a way that it brings repentance and growth.
Let each of us continue in our study of God’s Word, praying that we will be ready in season and out of season to diligently charge those we love with the truth. May we be quick to speak the truth in love with patience and instruction, not faltering, but with bold and faithful love. The word of God is not imprisoned (II Timothy 2:9) – let us be disciplined to share the word of truth with others, to apply the word of truth in our own lives as well.
