One word comes to my mind when I think of meaningful prayer is surrender. As I read God’s word and live day by day and year by year, I always see that humbling myself before my sovereign God puts me in the right position to pray in His will and to hear His voice.
There have been several “marker” decisions in my life when I have especially sought God’s wisdom and direction. I remember during my second year of college when I realized my lack of direction in life. I knew that God had a specific purpose for me, and I had not been looking to Him to find it. I spent Saturdays walking through the woods at Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky asking Him to reveal to me His purpose for my life. It wasn’t until the third Saturday that I said, “God, whatever you want to do with me, I am Yours.” It was at that moment of surrender that He clearly spoke to me. He said that He wanted me to be in Pastoral ministry using music as a tool.
Before that moment, Pastoral ministry was not on my radar screen. In fact, at that point in my life, I had not spent any of my time in High School or College with music. If I had not surrendered myself to God’s direction, I would never have pursued what He had created me to be and do.
I am convinced that surrender is an essential ingredient in prayer.
