Inevitably in recent election years there has been a fascination with the end times. There is even talk during this election that one of the candidates is "The Anti-Christ". In today's and yesterday's readings in Matthew's gospel we find the disciples questioning Jesus about this very same thing, "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" Jesus tells them that "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
So if we do not know when the end times are what is our responsibility as Christians? Well, thankfully, Jesus instructs repeatedly in Matthew 13 to "Watch out", "Be on guard! Be alert!", and "Watch!" So how do we do that? Here are some suggestions:
- Stay in God's Word! (How are you doing on your Bible reading plan so far this year?)
- Stay on your knees! (Honestly evaluate your prayer life.)
- Stay active in sharing your faith! (Have you shared your faith with even one person this year? Who are you investing in and inviting to church?)
- Live lives "worthy of the Gospel of Christ" (Philipians 1:27).
- Actively engage our culture with the truth of the Gospel.
