I will never forget the day we found out Mackenzie was going to be Mackenzie and not Jackson (Carrie and I had names picked out a long time ago. It's weird, but it works for us.) We were at the ultrasound technician's lab and the lady doing it says, "There you go. Can you tell?"
Now, I am a pretty perceptive person, but all I saw on that screen was white and gray matter moving around. I genuinely thought she was joking.
But then she began to point out things to provide perspective. She pointed out her legs, her knees, and her feet. She finally pointed out the part that I'd come to gain an answer from and the rest is history.
That day I learned to read an ultrasound. The sad thing is that two and a half years later, the same thing happened with Jackson. I couldn't see again.
Had I spent time every day during that time looking at ultrasounds, it would have been different. I would have immediately been able to recognize Jackson's gender. Time and experience would have made me a trained expert.
When it comes to being able to see life with spiritual eyes, we have to train ourselves to do this. We are in a physical world and if we are not careful, we can get caught only seeing with physical eyes. There is an entirely larger reality beyond our physical senses that can set us free to live in the physical world and a level we've never imagined. We must train or discipline ourselves to get beyond the physical to experience God and what He teaches us in the Bible to get better and more capable as sons and daughters of God.
