I Must Tell Jesus

Prayer requires a great consistency of intimacy with God on our part. It is amazing how prayer can be intimate and powerful one day and dutiful and seemingly powerless the next. I have a system when I pray to help keep me focused on praising and thanking God, confessing my sin, interceding for others, and asking God to work in areas of my life. The system is good, but prayer in all these areas without a nurtured intimacy with God results in a disappointing experience for me and I’m sure for God. A system cannot be a substitute for intimacy.

The gospel song penned by Elisha A. Hoffman entitled, “I Must Tell Jesus” has always been a shining example and inspiration to me from one who obviously has an intimate relationship with her Savior. Of the many meaningful stanzas, I want to include stanza four.

O how the world to evil allures me! O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me over the world the vict’ry to win.
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.

Even though prayer helps build intimacy with our great loving God, our hearts still have to desire that close relationship with Him. As we go through this week, let’s live with “I must tell Jesus” on our lips. Let's grow in intimacy with Him!
