In reading today’s devotional, “Learning to Love,” I couldn’t help but think about the current headline of yet another school shooting. It is natural to despise such a heinous act but often too easy to hate the person who commits it. I was reminded of a song by Andy Gullahorn, “That Guy.” The first two verses tell two examples of people we would be quick to judge, and through their sinful actions, hard for us to love. After explaining each scenario he simply states, “God loves that guy.” It is a reminder that each person is created in the image of God and we are called to love as God has loved. Andy then states the following:
“Me on the other hand, I can write somebody off
Like the last check for a student loan.
I can love when it’s convenient, but it’s not always convenient
It’s not always the easy road.
I wanna look past the outside, to the well-meaning heart,
To the good they forgot that they had.
Teach me to love, teach me to love, teach me to love like that.”
Whether it is a school shooter, a person who mistreated me as a child, or a family member who mocks my faith, I pray that God will continue to teach me to love each person as only He can.
