Isn’t it ironic that on Super Tuesday we find ourselves reading about giving to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and giving to God what belongs to God in Matthew 22? Let’s think on this for a moment.
If you’re looking for political endorsements, you won’t find any here. However, there are some things to consider when you look at how the world of politics intersects your faith. Many times I have heard people try to compartmentalize their life. They believe their finances have nothing to do with their faith. They try to show how their hobbies have nothing to do with their love for God. And, yes, I have heard people try to separate their political views away from their relationship with Christ.
Can this be right?
In Matthew 22:37, we are told to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. This is an echo from Deuteronomy 6:4 so we see it is a consistent concept throughout Scripture. As I hear God commanding Christians to love Him with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength I struggle to find the part of my life that God isn’t interested in. That means God is interested in which button I push when I go in the voting booth. In fact, I think God is interested in whether or not I go in the voting booth. What else does God care about?
God cares about justice. (Deuteronomy 27:19)
God cares about mercy. (Romans 11:32)
God cares about the poor. (Deuteronomy 24:15)
God cares about the widow and the orphan. (James 1:27)
God cares about the life of the unborn. (Psalm 139:13-16)
God cares about the sick. (James 5:14)
God cares about jobs. (Colossians 3:23-25)
When it comes your time to vote, Christian, will your vote reflect that you care about what God cares about?
